Hello, Crafters.
Today’s video shows how to make a fun Diorama card using the brilliant Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper (DSP)! You may remember this is the set I said I wasn’t planning on buying! Tomorrow my second pack of DSP will arrive! The images and designs in this pack just get my creative juices rushing!
The video is in response to a request I had, not just for a diorama card but one using this particular DSP. When Sharon sent me her request she said she thought it would be a fun card. She was definitely right there! Many thanks for you request Sharon. At times it was quite a challenge but I enjoyed it. I’m very happy to accept challenges – within reason! LOL!
The main problem I had with this card was that the middle layer tended to buckle when I flattened it down as if I was about to put it in an envelope. I persevered with trying different ways and eventually found the concertina sides worked better if I scored them on my Scoreboard rather then using my trimmer.
This suggests the fault could have been mine from the point of view that when I moved the piece of paper from half an inch to one inch I may have moved a tad over and when I moved it to one inch I may have moved it a tad under, and so on for all five score lines! Five tads could add up to something that could make a difference. Maybe I’m clutching straws; I don’t know!
I certainly found I achieved much better results when I used my scoreboard. Initially I was starting off with two pieces of cardstock for the sides that measured 4″ x 3″. Then I changed it to one piece that measures 8″ x 3″ and cut it into two pieces of 4″ x 3″ after I had scored the whole piece. These two changes certainly gave me much better results.
I would be very interested to hear if you have any thoughts on this. The card I made in the video has a slight warp but not enough to worry about. I’m also much happier with the sizes of the whales and the turtles on the video card, but this is why I always make prototypes before I start videoing! Don’t forget, if you have an idea for a video you’d like to see, please let me know! I enjoy challenges!
As I’m sitting here writing I have both Whale of a Time Diorama cards on the shelf in front of me and I’ve realised I only photographed the video card! That was a bit silly to say the least! Never mind. I think that’s it from me today. I wish you a very blessed Sunday, please take care and stay safe. Happy crafting.

Many thanks, Carmen. xx
These cards are wonderful Jan. I can see where this one could take a little more time to make. But I do like the end result. Be safe & TYFS
Many thanks, Claire. As you know, I don’t do quick cards! xx
really cute card – love it
Many thanks, Lynda. xx
WOW! Love these cards. Thanks so much for tutorial.
Many thanks, Sylvie. I’m pleased you enjoyed the tutorial. xx
I love the whale card but cannot find the cutting dimensions.
Hi, Vicki. All the measurements and products are listed in the box below the video. xx
I DID it – made the deep sea diorama – thanks to your video, it was much easier than I expected. I believe the reason it buckles (mine did badly initially) is due to the center layer. Note to self for next time: make sure before gluing the center section that it will lie FLAT – i needed to cut a bit off the end of mine and it worked fine! I used glitter glue for bubbles from the whales and a bit of scavenged coral for the front embellishments. Thank you for the FUN I had following your guidance today… XO
Many thanks, Billie. I’m pleased you were able to sort it out. xx
