Hello, Crafters.
Today’s video was requested by subscriber Janis who sent me a photograph of a card made by Amanda Bates aka the Craft Spa. I couldn’t find a video by Amanda but I did find two others. My first attempt was to make a 5¾” x 5¾” card which, although possible without layering dies, it would have required cutting three apertures using the trimmer – not one of my favourite tasks! Although the Stampin’ Up! Layering Square Dies have recently retired, they wouldn’t have been big enough for the size card I had planned to make.
I changed tack and went for a regular sized card which worked out so much easier because I was able to use the Stitched Rectangle dies. It proved to be a challenge working out how to do my regular middle and top layers around the aperture but I persevered and succeeded. When I’m planning a video, it isn’t enough for me that I can learn how to do it; it’s far more important that I can find a way I can teach crafters so they have success every time!
One part of my video demonstration didn’t work out as it should have done! That is, the Calypso Coral Cardstock (CS) cut-out from the aperture should have been used for the layer behind the stamped peaches image. While preparing for the video I found that if I cut off the four stitched lines around the cut-out, I could cut it to the correct size to be a layer for the image layer. When I tried this during the video it didn’t work out, i.e. it was too small.
I took another piece of Calypso Coral CS and cut a piece to the size I needed. After I had finished recording, I took another die-cut rectangle using the number 5 die, cut off the stitched lines and it still didn’t work! After checking the size of the required layer and the size of the die-cut I could see why it didn’t work! This is going to remain a mystery!
After a lot of experimenting, I finally made my first complete card which was a masculine card using the Wild Cats suite. Instead of stamping the images using the Wild Cats Stamp Set, I used an image I had die-cut previously from a design in the In The Wild Designer Series Paper (DSP). As much as I still love the Sailing Home Stamp Set, it’s great to have another great option for masculine cards!
For the masculine card I decided to dry emboss the top Basic White CS layer using the Animal Print Embossing Folder. After popping the tiger up on Dimensionals, I was going to add some die-cut grasses and plants around him to make him look as if he was sitting in the jungle. I decided against this idea and just added the HAPPY BIRTHDAY sentiment which I also popped up on Dimensionals.
On the Sweet as a Peach card I used the same DSP on the front of the card and inside on the back panel and on the tiger card I used two different designs. I think the idea worked well for both cards. Inside the tiger card I added a die-cut plant on the plain white panel as a small decoration but I always find it difficult finding something to decorate in the peach cards with!
I thoroughly enjoyed working out the sizes for today’s card and love the finished project. The card stands well and fits into a regular sized envelope. While I think this style will suit most occasions, I think it will be an excellent Christmas card! Don’t forget that Stampin’ Up! are offering nine different packs of DSP with a 15% discount until 2nd August 2021. Both designs I’ve used for these cards are on offer! Please check out the sale here: Designer Series Paper Sale.
That’s it from me today. I hope you have a very blessed Sunday and I look forward to seeing you next time. Take care and stay safe. Happy crafting.
JanB. xx

Manon
Heel erg bedankt, Manon.
YES! I do love it – your choice of colors, DSP, and arrangements are always artistic. Guess I need some more papers…. Thank you always for generously sharing ideas, examples, enthusiasm…
Many thanks, Billie. If you need more Designer Series Paper, get it while it’s on special offer (ends on 2nd August 2021)! xx
Thank you so much Jan for this amazing design. I am always looking for unique designs to send to my 2 granddaughters in college. I am curious what DSP you would use to go with the donkeys. I so love that stamp set and struggle with DSP to go with it that isn’t just plain colors.
Sunday morning to watch your videos is something I totally look forward to.
Many thanks for your very kind words Lola. For the Darling Donkeys I’d choose something that says “outdoors” like trees (beauty of the Earth, leaves, brickwork (Bloom where you’re planted), etc. These will give you an idea of what I mean and you may have something in your stash that’s similar. If it’s for your granddaughters there’s a lovely design of leaves in the forthcoming Painted Christmas 12″ x 12″ in the new Christmas Mini catalogue. If you have your copy, see page 17 and it’s the 8th design along starting from the left-hand side. Although it has some darkish green leaves, most of them are light or very light green. I hope this helps. xx
Goedemorgen Jan.
groetjes

Hallo, Manon.
Your lovely cards along with detailed instructions are a blessing to others. Especially pop-out swing cards or any type of cards not using A2 size. your blog is amazing. Thanks for sizes.
Many thanks for your very kind words, Marlene. They are very much appreciated. xx
