Hello, Crafters.
Did you read the heading and think “How can an easel card be a single fold card?” I was surprised when I first saw one, too! It has probably been one of my biggest challenges so far, but as we all my challenges, it has been well worth the effort. The reason behind the challenge is that the video was in Japanese, with small English subtitles, using letter-size cardstock! When I saw the card on Pinterest I thought it was a fabulous card and a great idea. After investigating, I found it was made by a Japanese Stampin’ Up! demonstrator in October 2020. Unfortunately, SU closed its office in Japan in December 2020. I think the young lady’s name is Hee Jung Hunsberger and her YouTube channel is called HMADE STUDIO. She made her card using the Poinsettia Petals Stamp Set and the matching Poinsettia Dies. This is the link to her video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWtzXTe7WrE. Please check it out because it’ll be easy to see how she created the poinsettias and will be well worth seeing.
The first card I made was the Real Red Valentine card. It wasn’t until I reached the end of the video that I found out that the ribbon was adhered to the front of the flower pot and cut off at each side i.e. it wasn’t wrapped around the plant pot! Had I realised this, I might not have used such a very large embossed design i.e. the Bark 3D Embossing Folder. When I adhered the ribbon onto the embossed flower pot, the ribbon went up and down in all the bumps and crevices! It wasn’t a good look! Also, I’m not a fan of the cut ends of ribbons. It’s a minor criticism and I’m still happy with the overall end result.
The second card I made was the birthday card with Fresh Freesia as my colour choice. I decided to use it as my card base rather than Basic White which is what I used for my first card. My choice of Designer Series Paper (DSP) is the Friendly Hello DSP which is available as a Sale-a-bration level 2 gift with the matching stamp set called Friendly Hello. This is a lovely bundle and there is a great selection of different designs in the DSP.
Using a colour – as opposed to white – for the card base certainly made life easier when it came to cutting out the plant pot once it had been adhered to the card base. This statement may not make much sense but it will do once you’ve seen the video. I decided to wrap the ribbon around the plant pot and tie it into a bow at the front. I was rather hoping that if I adhered the bow onto the front of the card using a Mini Glue Dot that the ribbon would stay in place. Unfortunately, as the day wore on the ribbon started to slide down the sides and at the back!
To remedy this, after I had pushed the ribbon back up in position, I adhered another stamped, die-cut dahlia plus leaf over the ribbon. The idea worked and it stayed in place! For my second card, I used the Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder for the plant pot. This was a much better idea because the embossing was still just as visible but not so deep. Our 3D Embossing Folders are really amazing!
As you know, I struggle with straight lines, so I’m always looking for ways to make my life easier. One of these is to use Double Sided Foam Adhesive to adhere sentiments to my cards. In the video I show how I measure a sheet to cut a strip to fit the sentiment layer, This allows me to use my ruler to decide where I want to adhere and to add two pencil marks for my guide. I add the strip to the sentiment layer, add some Tombow to and line up in position. Adding the Tombow allows me some wiggle room and the strip can be placed over the pencil mark so I don’t have to worry about removing them. It will make much more sense if you watch the video!
I hope you like this fancy fold card as much as I do and give it a try. I hope you have a very blessed Sunday and whatever your plans are, please take care and stay safe. Happy crafting.
JanB. xx
