Hello, Crafters.
Yesterday I had my first play with the Tulip Fields Stamp Set and matching Windmill Fields Dies. The Designer Series Paper (DSP) pack that matches this bundle is called Flowering Fields and if you’re into making quick cards, this is the pack for you! I don’t make quick cards but when I saw the fabulous designs in this pack I wish I did. I have so many ideas of different ways of using these designs. Maybe one day, I’ll spend some time making thank you cards for my customer who is always asking for them!
I decided to use some of the DSP to do most of the work for today’s card. I wanted time to play with the small windmill stamp and die, as well as the fencing dies. The design from the DSP I chose to use first is my favourite sheet in the pack. It’s the sheet where several different lines of tulips taper down into the top left hand corner of the sheet. I only needed a piece that measured 1⅞” tall x 5⅜” wide, which in a way was a shame because there is only one point where this part of the design occurs – how super this would be for a scrapbook page?! For the sky I chose another design and took another piece that measured 1⅞” x 5⅜” and adhered both pieces onto a middle layer of Basic White Cardstock (CS).
Nest I took some Soft Suede CS and die-cut a number of pieces of fencing – I used the one double die and the four single dies and ran them through my machine three times. I put them all in a pile to keep them safe! Apart from the sentiment, the last part I needed for the front of my card was the small windmill from the stamp set. I decided to stamp the image onto a piece of Basic White CS using Soft Suede Ink. After I had die-cut the image, I decided the white edges and the white that can be seen through the squares on the sails was too stark to go against the sky! To remedy this I decided to create a mask and used some Herma Special Removable Labels instead of the usual Post It Notes.
These labels are new to me and I found out about them from a video I watched made by a German demonstrator. Basically, the labels are like white Post It Notes but sticky all over. I know in the US you can gets rolls of Post It tape that is sticky all over but I haven’t been able to find them in the UK. More about these labels in next Sunday’s video. I stamped my mask onto a piece of a Herma Label and cut out just the body of the windmill – I discarded the sails. The mask has since been stored inside my stamp case because it can be re-used!
Next I put the mask over my stamped and die cut image. Using my light blue Blending Blush and Pool Party Ink, I coloured very gently all over the exposed part of my image, which included all the white edging around the windmill. All I was doing was toning down the starkness of the Basic White CS and it didn’t take much to achieve it! Next time I try this, I’ll fussy cut the entire image and then put the mask on. I didn’t do it that way on this occasion because I know a lot of crafters are anti-fussy cutting and I wanted to make sure it would work for them. And it does! Beautifully! I adhered my fencing one piece at a time and overlapped the uprights between panels. Two of the double panels went walkabouts so I had to use all singles which was slower but it worked! I found the two runaways on the floor when I started tidying up! Once I was about two thirds of the way across I stopped and adhered the windmill in place.
To complete the fence, I started on the right-hand outside edge and started working to the middle again. I knew there would be a gap in the fence but I didn’t know how wide it would be. As it happened it was very short which finished up just in front of the windmill door. I decided to leave it because from a distance it looked a big enough gap for someone to walk through! By the way, I used my Crumb Cake Stampin’ Write Marker pen to colour the main body of the windmill. I adhered the completed layer onto a Pool Party CS card base which gave me a chance to decide what size sentiment I wanted. My chosen sentiment NO ONE DESERVES A HAPPIER BIRTHDAY THAN YOU is from the Flowering Tulips Stamp Set is another product from the Flowering Fields Suite. This stamp set also has a matching set of dies called Tulips and these dies have been designed to make 3D tulips!
I stamped the sentiment using Soft Suede Ink onto a piece of Basic White Cs and die-cut it using a fancy die from the Ornate Frames dies. The white of the sentiment blends in with the white of the middle layer and I was happy to leave it like this. Yes, I agree it is very stark but it looks very much in the foreground of my card and adds depth to the overall look. I finished the front of my card by painting the sails and the windmill with Wink of Stella Clear Glitter Pen. I also added two Brass Butterflies to the sentiment. To decorate the inside of my card, I adhered a middle layer of Basic White CS and adhered another stamped, die-cut windmill in the bottom right-hand corner. I had stamped it in Soft Suede Ink and when I painted over it with my Wink of Stella Clear Glitter Pen, it pulled some of the colour from the outline and coloured the white bits! Unplanned but very pleasing!
I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with this bundle and am now ready to start working on a project for this month’s Create With Us International PDF Tutorial which will be featuring the Flowering Fields Suite. (NOTE: This PDF Tutorial is free to my customers who place a qualifying order during February 2022.
