Hello, Crafters.
Today’s video shows how to make a spinner card. I have already made similar cards but I was inspired by a beautiful card made by the amazing Jennifer McGuire. To cut the “window” for the spinning butterfly, Jennifer used a fancy die which is very similar to one of our dies! Ours is in the Birds & More Dies which matched the Birds & Branches Stamp Set. For me, what made Jennifer’s card really stand out was that she used the same “window” die for the front of her card.
This is the link for Jennifer’s video Inside Surprise Spinner Card. Do check it out. Her video also shows other ideas for spinner cards. I used Mango Melody for my colour choice for my video card. For me, this colour has really come into its own since I paired it with the fabulous design from the Flowering Fields Designer Series Paper (DSP). You may remember I also used it for my mid-week card on my blog but without the DSP! Back to the card.
My prototype card is the card below. I decided to make something simple so I could make sure the size of the die I wanted to use would be big enough. I knew it might not work out so I didn’t use too much stash in case the idea didn’t work! Initially, I didn’t like the completed card but the more I looked at it laying on my desk the more I liked it. The cardstock is Fresh Freesia and Basic White. To decorate it I used the butterflies dies from the Meadow Dies that I have used for all four cards. The flowers and leaves are all from the Pierced Blooms Dies.
Next I decided to try a 5¾” square card which still needs to be finished off. My first attempt was using the Flowering Fields DSP die-cut with the “window” die. Unfortunately the inner part of the window die-cut lost its impact because it was layered onto Fresh Freesia cardstock and was die-cut using the patterned DSP. My first effort to remedy this was to go over the leaves with a Dauber and Whisper White Craft Ink.
Although it did make the fancy bits a lot lighter, they still looked rather subdued! Finally, I die-cut a “window” using Basic White cardstock and then die-cut it using the no. 8 straight cut circle die from the Layering Circles Dies. Next, I very carefully and very patiently adhered the fancy white bits on top of the DSP fancy cut bits plus the very narrow rim. I succeeded but it’s obvious I have adhered a white layer on top of the DSP layer. You may not see it in the photographs but it’s definitely visible in real life! At this point I decided to take a break and put the card to one side until the following day!
It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep can do for my thought processes! As I was having a shower, I had a lightbulb moment and knew how to make this card in a way that I’d be happy with it and video viewers would look at it and say “I can do that”! I used the same colour scheme as the previous card but I went back to the C6 (A2) size card. I had worked out the easy way to get the white fancy window with the fancy white bits sitting on a background of Fresh Freesia; now I needed to prove it would work. My solution was to take an extra square of Basic White Cardstock and die-cut the “window” from it.
Next I die-cut a circle from the top layer of DSP and adhered the extra white die-cut “window” square so it fitted inside the die-cut circle! It was an absolute breeze and I was now in the right frame of mind to make today’s video! But before I did, I finished this card off by adding two die-cut butterflies in the front “window” with three Brass Burnished Butterflies. I added one extra inside on the white panel with three more Brass Butterflies. When I was preparing for the video card I made the butterflies but instead of die-cutting them from cardstock, I used the reverse side of the DSP I would be using in the video. I felt it added something a bit extra. I also played around trying to give the butterflies antenna and I loved the idea I came up with. In the video I give a close of demo of how did it. I hope you enjoy today’s video and give this card a try.
Hubby and I are going to our son-in-law’s 50th birthday party today. This is the first time the family will all be together since the first lockdown back in March 2020! Unfortunately, Leigh’s parents won’t be able to join us because his Dad has Covid and his Mum is self-isolating. The rest of us have all agreed to take a lateral flow test before the party. I hope you have a very blessed Sunday. Take care and stay safe. Happy crafting.
JanB. xx

Hi Jan, What a lovely card! You have made me like the Mango Melody cardstock! I can’t wait to try making this card. Have a wonderful time at your son-in-law’s birthday party today,
Many thanks, Laura. It’s only been my last two videos that I’ve started appreciating Mango Melody!! xx
